Qing Zuo !

72 days in China.. life is full of work and excitement here. A new body is shaping (literally) over the weeks, full with experiments and working with local craftspeople. The environment is a inspiration to work in and specially with a direct access to material and local expertise. The days are short although everyone is working 7 days a week. The new work will be different then what I made before and with using different media next to ceramic to make it into a exciting new journey, the new work will be coming up after summer. Qing Zuo! Work in progress !

Presentation in Jingdezhen

You showed us a surprising movie about Jingdezhen, why did you start with this?

I made a movie driving through Jingdezhen and every time I realize again how much that gives me the right feeling of being a stranger in this city that feels like home, the hectic life outside the taxi is like a dream passing by and I'm just breathing in parts, changing my view on environment but also have a deep joy for cities. With transformed colors and combined with up-tempo music it was a powerful media to use and it took the people from Jingdezhen right back in my bubble. There was no better start to feel again how different common life can be.

How does your past in product design influence or change now your ceramic work?

My background matters to me alot, how I have my view on the environment and how I develop my work-methods. My present work with ceramics creates a new understanding of working, how in productdesign the thinking became the work now the material becomes the work. I give material more freedom now to make choices in the end-result and in my past product thinking the end-result a lot of time was a set goal.

You say your study product design learned how to have a different view on life, is this not also in other disciplines like in Art?

Yes, you can say that. I believe that working in design you should create a fresh view on what is needed, question the environment or even more think how your work could be a influence on other people's thinking and their choices. Art, Architecture and Design still have such a different audience and goals but they share functioning for/with the people on different scale. Beside the different varieties in design from highly industrial to almost entertaining object the view stays important. The use of products can have a wide meaning, I think its very important to dare yourself to see 'use' in various ways and wonder what design sh(c)ould be?

How do you view your future in ceramics, can we call you a ceramist after your MA?

I believe, I won't become a ceramist even after my Master @ the Royal Collage in London. I use the material to build my view on how we use our daily lives and create&answer questions. It is very good to deepen knowledge of the material and doing my Master gave a opportunity to go beyond the surface and learn/experiment. Also my work abroad in China changed me alot, the discussion and bridging between cultures is my engine in many ways. By now I can say that the Interrelations between me and the material, the audience and different disciplines make me who I am, I'm still a designer but with a fresh language learned outside my discipline and this builds on my passion for environment and people they can not be placed in 1 box, our cultures are a lively proof of this.

By working now in Jingdezhen/Shanghai/Tangshan a lot of new relationships have started and create for me my coming future to build on, probably founded with ceramics but in different scales, projects and new views where interrelating the ultimate key is.

china update

Small update …… life in Shanghai is good, it is very warm but I’m also having a real good time. Exploring area’s again that changed dramatic after my last visit and making all plans more final. I had so far very interesting work talks/invitation with a new firm about ceramics/future/the bigger picture & visions and specially how we could work together at good level in near future.

Next week I’ll move over to Jingdezhen for 6 weeks working on experiments and have more practical research with local people. The weeks will be filled with working with local workshops, going to factories and exploring around on my bike, cycling like a true Chinese this meaning on both sides of the road at the same time and still staying alive!

In September I’ll fly over to Tangshan visiting the firm’s factory and artists + some exciting meetings with Beijing designers on agenda for possible work. The idea moving to China now after finishing the RCA is getting much more realistic and life here feels within few days as normal, I look forward staying here longer then just for a work trip

Wo ai Shanghai, ni ne?!

China research trip '07

The months passed by quickly in London and although it might have been quiet on my website, this was due to lot of working. Living and working in London opened a lot of new approaches to work and for near future there are a lot of exciting plans on agenda.

In the very near future my passion/investigation in China will proceed after my work trip in the winter of ’05 -’06 . This July I will return again to my beloved Shanghai for few months divided time between Shanghai / Jingdezhen / Tangshan for work and engaging with Chinese designers and craftsmanship/factories.

The work in China this summer will be investigation and experiments about the process of design. I will meet up Chinese designer friends, exploring workspace and engage in the different understanding of working and product . This all will be the key for the new collection that will shape in the next year for the Royal Collage of Art graduation.

The next months an update will be send around for more information on the project in China this summer. From begin October I will be stationed again in London. For any further information don’t hesitate to email to info@judithvandenboom.nl

Exhibition @ Legiokunst gallery (NL)

In one of the 3 rooms in gallery Legiokunst , Judith van den Boom will exhibit her work and world from this period of her life in London. Her ceramics combine a dark humour with a figurative language. April 1st is the opening in Tilburg (NL), were she will show her work Boom & Friends. She collaborates with friend designer Sharon Geschiere to show collection of work, some pieces designed together and supported with their own work. Reason for this, is the love for discussion amongst design and the combination of work that seems so different.

“ Sharon Geschiere is a designer who shares this with me and has same passion for these subjects.” Says Van den Boom. “ Design and ceramics are for me things that go beyond product design. It’s a state of mind, a exploration form idea to a end result what can manifest itself in various ways. We should not limit ourselves by the clichés design can corner itself in.”

The exhibition will show a different showcase, with work made in London, China and work collaborated with Sharon Geschiere. It will tell a story about the process of design. The process she lives daily these days in a vibrant world in London.

Legiokunst will also show the various works of the following designers / artists;
painting - michael de kok
bag design - maria hees, majo joostens, elly kersten, ulrike sterman, irene weijs, geesje de jong

New Urban Reality

The 14th of June was a intens day, a full day trip in Rotterdam to visit the China Contemporary exhibitions, with subjects of architecture, urbanism and visual culture. I ended the evening with a crowded lecture from Rem Koolhaas about the changing China but most of all also by looking at ourselfs. To make the change is to see what’s inside and be aware of our own enviromental history and character, our controlling minds fed by economical, social, consuming, secured lives and de-naturalized suroundings.

If you look at future and create all acces to options, you have to stand still and take time to see were you are situated. This in perception of roots, enviroment , capability and ambitions. What is there to preserve? What matters ? Were do you take a buildozer to make some radical changes. What is life without the excitiment of creativity, you have to feed this engine in you, one fo the reasons to be in Rotterdam this time.

The admoshere struck me at these exhibitions, partly because they are very honnest to me, looking at them and knowing my steps in China, made me wanna go back instantly. But als looking at my worktrip in China and now being back, it’s good to take a distant step and analyze what I experienced and wanna proceed in future. Seeing the Chinese showing their work made me feel connected with a lot of subjects they thought about and I felt the borders dissapear and just a huge overlap in thougths with these Chinese artists and designers. It is good to see and value all these discussions in your mind but even better is to share them and come up with tastefull, provocative, critical and even better beautifull plans

To share these thougths, I ended this with the crowded lecture from Rem Koolhaas were a lot of things were said, a lot of things I also thought about but now became into a puzzle that made sense. Lectures are good places to test out new ideas and not be to prepared of what will happen. A good space for discussion and a open mind, to walk out with a exploding mind of the creative engine that made extra hours instantly. It was time to leave Rotterdam to over-think al what was seen, said and felt. A GOOD DAY!

Fresh trouble in the city

...is it that freshness is expected?
...or is the trouble that there is nothing fresh?
...does trouble guarantee freshness?
...when anything is permissible what remains troubling?
...how do trouble and or freshness resulting from artist activities effect the cities they call home?

Doing Design....Playtime!!

Design is a word with many perspectives, something people use often in life, for better or worse. Well, in the world I work it’s common language. In the development of a new product starts a whole senario. It starts with a thought but then there is the action. There are a lot of different aproaches on making the design. From handdrawn to high technology computers models, to assignments in factories, but as I like to stay close on the material, I am in the factory processing the home-made delivery.

I value high the ‘signature’ of the maker in it’s work and is one of the choices for keeping close to the production of my work and collections, but there is more what keeps me working till deep at night.

Being on top of the process gives a wide range in oppertunities and choices, so many more experiments come up. While working weeks fulltime on a production, I schedule myself some playtime to refresh my mind and explore the ‘attics’ of the factory and keep in touch with ideas outside the production. Playtime is a interresting part in work, it gives a fresh focus and ideas to come up with new shapes and tests. Working with ceramics gives a wide range of possibilities from material, shape, glazes and how to fire, every part in the process has a big influence and keeps me dedicaded in every part of the process.

Working with the material itself gives a whole new feeling to the design on the paper.Working with actual sizes, demo’s and solving technical problems makes you aware of possibilities you never thought of before….PLAYTIME !

It’s a definate need in my process to keep the vitamins in. The fasination and ‘what if’ question in my field of work keeps me up till late and being able to explore this right away is true playtime for me. For instance working in China gave me so much positive bagage in plans, demo’s and ideas, I could never cover that in the 3 months. Now being back in Holland time and chances are here to create playtime related to all China works I made in Jingdezhen and Shanghai. Thanks to the Royal Delft Blue factory I can practice my plans and ideas to create playtime.

From October on I will relocate to the RCA in London to have some serious playtime.
A nessecary moment every designer should have!

China comes to Delft

A day well spend! Caroline Cheng and Benben from the ceramicstudio in Shanghai came over to Delft to visit the Royal Delft blue factory and to see my work. A great afternoon where the ofcourse Blue ceramics was discussed versus Jingdezhen. A great expierince to have them here for a short while and have the culturshock on their side instead of me being in Shanghai. A afternoon with a lot of reasons to start more collaborations with China. Hope the future brings more perspective then only blue!

Mind is a picture

I draw lines , simple but effictive, they represent this picture in my mind
They should transfer this image. Looking at them. they represent the roots and ideas where they came from, there is a story atached. At the moment I give this picture to someone else, I communicate only a few procent in the lines I shared.
It’s a fasinating process to watch a person who is shaping the picture in my mind.
A communication were you transfer simple lines and putting into reality by this other person in shape. A process I expierinced in the factories in Jingdezhen but till this day facinates me. The moment I let this picture go it’s a carte blanche. The other re-shapes this idea and produces a fasinating visual picture.
My mind and his hands. His mind and my picture a process unexplainable but hightly fasinating, a serie of shapes that continue and transfer in a feeling of being in nomansland. They belong to the proces , they are shared and represent a start of collaboration.

Do London

After weeks in Holland it is time to hit the road again, together with Sharon Geschiere I’ll go to London. To see the different side on life with all this drive-on-left attitude. Being at the RCA for few days and figuring out all for having a great show at Designersblock in Londen this September. Here it starts, a backpack, some ceramics, more plans and to much energy to make this a success !

05 March 2006

Jingdezhen expierince

After few weeks in Shanghai I got on a flight to Jindezhen, after all the stories I heard about this ceramic capital I had to go and see for myself. Caroline has her 2nd studio here for recidency artists and I could work there beside work in Shanghai. My first trip to Jingdezhen was so impressive I didn’t want to go back to Shanghai, a expierince of true tuff chinese life working in this city and surviving with ceramics. This city goes way back when it comes to ceramics and all the expertise is still here. There are huge ceramic traditions something you will notice daily working with the local craftsmen. I came back for a second and longer time to work with factories and people and noticed right away I need to come again. So much seen, so much written down, tomuch to take at once.

A great time in the studio with people and a time that made impact on my look on ceramic design. I had a preview of what all would be possible. In the end of the months I shipped back my crate to Holland to finnish things here and plan this year. A good chance China will be in this list again.
Special thanks to all people at studio specially Libby and Jiang Bo for friendship and to help me out
!

Shanghai expierince

My trip to Shanghai started 1 november 2005. For the next 3 months I would work on new products and expirements at the studio of Caroline Cheng in Shanghai. My first trip to China was not really a shock but more a new page in my european mind were I saw a differant perspective on how life can develop. Shanghai was a space were I meet a lot of people in art & design , to work with, to share, enjoy, discuss with but most of all reflect all what we saw and did. I would go back if there was a chance, need no minute to think about. There is a network created what hopefully will develop in a great perspective.

The red building is the studio at Taikang Lu, it's located in the French Consession area. other photo's give a impression what happend in the streets around me.

Start of China

To begin my workjourney to China last 2005 I was lucky to have a review in the Dutch newspaper about this trip and my work. Working in China for several months was a incredible expierince. A place I made lot of contacts and learned, discoverd and shared new ways of working. I worked mainly in Shanghai and also few weeks in Jingdezhen. In the end of Januari I returned back to Holland and shipped al made work back home to prepare for new exhibitions.

The start of 2006 began in China and hopefully envolve more outside the Dutch borders.
